 Hilda Brandt

My name is Hilda Brandt. I am German and live in Frankfurt with my father, Klaus Brandt. These days we have a very tense relationship. He is a member of the Nazi party, and is helping to destroy the Jewish people.

I am a violinist and am in love with Sol Goldberg, who is a Jewish pianist. I'm sure you can guess, but this displeases my father greatly. But I love Sol, he is a good German. We met whilst playing in the Frankfurt Sinfonietta. I would do anything for him, as well as his mother Martha and sister Anya. They are like family to me too. We are all good Germans.

"Would that he would listen to me, Gustav. The conductor has gone mad, but my father believes the orchestra still plays masterpieces."

"Can you let Sol do the kissing, please."

"Martha! I'm home! I got bread, and oranges, can you believe it! And guess what. I even managed to get some coff… (Silence as she turns to see the scene.) Hello? Martha?"

"A little girl. Do you hear me? Her name is Anya. Have you got that? Anya! A child. What has she ever done, except learn her lessons, listen at school, love her poetry, just as I did father…

A little girl. Barred from school. Her parents spat upon. Their windows smashed. Your men, your men! Standing back, allowing it.

What a great German Hero."

"I have come to give myself up.....

                         .....I am   a Jew."
